Are you good at keeping secrets? Can you remember the last time someone whispered something in your ear and the weight of their words almost took your breath away?
In today’s verse, we enter a conversation where Jesus was speaking to the twelve disciples. He was preparing their hearts and minds for great ministry.
The word “darkness” in the original text means “dark places or in secrecy”. Jesus was sharing secrets with His disciples with the promise that one day soon, they would be able to shout this great news from the housetops for all to hear.
You may be thinking, That’s great but what does this have to do with me?
Well, as I read through this verse in my quiet time this week, I asked God to show me some truths you and I can glean from Jesus’ words and apply to our lives today.
Here is what I discovered:
1. God speaks to us in the dark places.
Oh, what we would give to avoid the hard times in our lives! Those struggles we dread or pray will never happen. And, yet, we see in this verse that God speaks to us in the darkness, in the secret place.
When it’s just you and Him. Wrestling out the thing you so desperately want to avoid. There is purpose. There is truth. There are teachable moments. Otherwise, God would never put you through it in the first place. He has some things to tell you. Are you listening?
2. Daybreak always comes after the darkness.
Although we sometimes wonder if it will ever come, as children of God, we have the promise of daybreak. God’s mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness! By God’s mercy, our dark places can be transformed into beams of brilliant light that shine for His glory.
3. The whispers of God are for all to hear.
When our season of difficulty has passed let’s be sure to celebrate the victory and share with others what God taught us in the dark, secret place. In fact, I’ve discovered one of the most powerful tools for chipping away the darkness is to praise and thank God in the midst of it. It’s not easy but it’s powerfully effective.
Maybe you’re in a great season of life. No trials. No struggles. No darkness. That’s awesome, friend! Yet, God is still whispering in your ear. Sharing truths that you can shout from the rooftops for all to hear!
It’s Your Turn:
What is God whispering to you?
Do you have a journal or notebook? Why not keep it handy so that every time you sense the Holy Spirit whispering a new truth in your ear, you can write it down. Afterwards, see if you can find it in Scripture. Does what you hear line up with God’s Word. Does it line up with His character?
If you’re not ready to share your secret yet, I completely understand. But if you do have something to share I’d love for you to leave a comment below.
Until next week, stay in the Word and stay awesome!

I went to an awe-inspiring ministry at my church this past weekend (on my birthday:) that aimed at teaching us to hear the Holy Spirit speaking to us, especially in times of darkness. I have been going through a “dark” period for quite a while now, but I have chosen to praise God in the darkness until He shows me the light at the end of the tunnel. Since that seminar, I have renewed hope and feel that the Holy Spirit is speaking to me and guiding me day by day! I have always had faith that God was with me through thick and thin, but sometimes in the darkness, it is easy to doubt that at times. Thank you for your insights!!

Great thoughts Leah!! Thanks for sharing the secret!! Two nights ago, He gave me a secret I quickly jotted in my journal and then yesterday shared in a blog post – “Obedience does not result in love, it is a response to it.” Probably an obvious statement, but for me it went to the heart and could be a game changer!! Blessings to you!! And keep sharing His secrets!!

I loved this post. My pastor preached a similar messagea couple of weeks ago called “The God Who Works in the Darkness.” I love the idea about keeping a journal handy to write those whispers from the Holy Spirit down so we can study on them and share them with others.

Melanie, journaling is a wonderful way of recording those conversational highlights with God. When tough times come it provides a opportunity for us to look back and be reminded of God’s faithfulness in our lives. 🙂

Martha, I’m so glad you enjoyed today’s post. God continues to weave a beautiful tapestry of conversation with His children. Oh, how blessed we are to call Him, Abba Father!
